History of the illuminations in general
The most important art and above all, more particularly ephemeral festive Pugliese is precisely that of the "Illuminations" that adorn the squares and streets of the courses and the countries on holidays. But how does born a decoration? We start by sketching the design on a sheet of plain paper and then immediately trying to enlarge it. Often the floor or asphalt road replaces the paper in this operation. In fact, as in the past, these artists demonstrate the effect of the initial design of asphalt and clearings in fact, looking down, they are able to see the perspective effect, to amend the defects, thereby making the initial idea of the model more perfect. To save time and money these artists, not realizing models such as set designers, they must have a great sense of perspective and a strong ability to see the finished work, with all the combinations that can be performed only by drawing. During these many tests are used colored chalk which is then used as a guide to who is assigned to arrange the coloured lights for different lighting effects. From the final model is passed to the building in scale with wooden reproduction, usually prefers the tree fir because it lends itself to that kind of work because of its robustness, its lightness and ease of cutting and carving, as essential to create a work similar to a huge embroidery that must be maintained on its compactness and solidity. It must be noted that the entire design is divided into several pieces (elements and frames) that can be mounted easily, and that, given the size of the square can be removed or added by modifying the design with more combinations. The skill and above all the experience led him to be fully aware of the breadth and length of the various squares of the province and to be able to plan how you will mentally prepared the whole gallery. After building these large wooden frames so rich swirls, squiggles, circles, arches, railings, pendants, plumes and roses, is followed by further testing by bringing together all the elements are the initial design on the floor to see the effect and if all is well positioned and proportioned. A third stage of processing is that of painting frames with different color paint white, because white reflects the light. A doyen of this art reminds us of the days when it was forced to light by using carbide and acetylene: it took was a gust of wind lifted the glasses and dripped on people passing on the apparatus smearing clothes. Since then many years passed, the modern electrical systems, along with those of security, have now won this particular field was, nevertheless, genuinely artisan.
It is perhaps interesting to remember that even though technology now provides virtually unlimited use of combinations of colors, usually prefers to choose and insert a few, combining harmoniously so as to give a perfect elegance decoration lights, enhancing their expression and simplifying reading. The bulbs are stained by the same artisans who slips from the ring on a stretcher covered with perforated hardboard and, using a compressor, spray paint suitable at this point in the bake ovens that reach temperatures of 50-60 degrees making them dry: this procedure bulbs then purchase transparency and shine a bright light emanating.
Subsequently these bulbs, and those mignon micromignon, whose electric potential varies from 5 to 25 volts, are already included in the appropriate holder and fastened to wooden frames are then placed in the circuit connected by "mass" and "in parallel": for each series of large bulbs 8 lamps are used by 15 volts and 25 watts for each set of those little bulbs are used 14 15 and 5 Volt. Of course beyond the imagination needs a good dose of patience and skill because the game of colored lights to be executed with precision, skill and technique not only to achieve the desired effect, but also to avoid annoying problems with electricity, such as breakage of the bulb filament or glass. The result is "Arco Reale", "Moulin Rouge", the "Duomo di Milano", the "Arco Gotico", "roselline", "la giarrettiera ", "la conchiglia ", "il Pavone" and so on. It must be stressed that all these names are invented or coined by the same craftsmen and became part of common language. This is a collection of proposals, individually selected by the Organising Committee, illuminate the entrance to the feast or the streets facing the church where he holds the statue of the saint to whom, theoretically, are dedicated to similar tributes. How can we know, the artists of the illuminations are primarily designers and carpenters, and then electricians. They do everything themselves inventiveness forms to build the wooden frames, to place the bulbs of different intensity and power, assembling and disassembling the ‘decoration’, considering those used to implement it fully, we would lose the account. On average, employees work about 18-20 hours a day, moving completely from one country to another. But after all this hard work to mount, here, the thousands of colored lights stand out in the clear summer nights cleverly embedded like gems that recall the work of a Lombard or Byzantine gold studded with precious stones, where the wooden structure disappears. It's all color and line, assayed by mastery of color and elegance with style, in a burst of light. At this point I should describe the elements used to use it if it does. From the first structures that still remain as the «galleria» and«cassarmonica», have come to create new structures that have taken the name of «spalliera», «frontone», «rosone»and other pieces that can be used to fill gaps, such as «campane», «stelle»,«candelabro». All these new furnishings, with the passage of time, have emerged as fixtures.
